Smart Waste Solution at Burger King: less emptying, lower costs, more time for guests

At Burger King Lijnbaan in Rotterdam, the team faced a daily challenge: six traditional waste bins that filled up quickly. Staff had to empty them multiple times a day to keep the restaurant clean — taking up valuable time, space, and increasing cleaning costs.

The solution: two Ultra Fills with built-in compaction

After the restaurant’s renovation in January 2025, Burger King chose the Ultra Fill — a smart, self-compacting waste bin that can hold up to five times more waste.
Thanks to the high capacity, only two smart bins were needed to replace the original six, and they now only need to be emptied once or twice a day.

More efficiency, lower costs

The switch brought immediate, measurable benefits:

  • Fewer emptying rounds per day

  • Lower waste management costs

  • Less cleaning effort and fewer overflowing bins

  • More time for guest experience

“Before, we spent a lot of time emptying bins and keeping the area clean,” the Burger King team explains. “Now we can focus on what truly matters — our guests.”

Smart sensors for real-time insight

Each Ultra Fill is equipped with a fill-level sensor, allowing the team to see exactly when a bin needs to be emptied. The collected data also provides valuable insights into usage patterns and cost savings, helping to optimize operational planning.

Nationwide rollout of smart waste solution

The smart waste solution has now been implemented at other busy Burger King locations as well, including Schiphol Airport and Leidseplein in Amsterdam. With this initiative, Burger King is demonstrating that efficiency and sustainability can go hand in hand — all while maintaining a clean and welcoming environment for guests.
